Day 3 belonged to New Zealand. England began the day at 221/2, trailing by 215 with eight wickets in hand and their two overnight batters well set. They finished the day staring at a deficit of 204 with only seven New Zealand wickets still to fall. Nathan Smith, William O’Rourke and concussion substitute Zakary Foulkes combined to bowl England out for 354 before Jofra Archer’s hostile new-ball spell provided brief hope, only for Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell to wrestle back control with an unbroken 69-run stand.
Morning Collapse Swings the Match
The damage was done inside the first 13 balls. Nathan Smith trapped Joe Root (21) lbw with the keeper standing up to the stumps, a tactic that had worked for Matt Henry at The Oval, and Root’s review confirmed the ball was clipping leg. Two overs later, O’Rourke found the outside edge of Jacob Bethell (74), who had batted so impressively across the first two days but added nothing to his overnight score. Jamie Smith lasted just 12 balls before Smith picked up his second wicket when Daryl Mitchell scooped up a low catch at first slip.
Harry Brook and Ben Stokes steadied things briefly, adding 42 for the sixth wicket, but Foulkes produced a sharp nip-backer that kept low to bowl Stokes (15) and break the stand. England went to lunch at 314/6, already well behind the game.
Brook Falls to a Beauty, Tail Folds

Brook batted with authority after lunch, driving and cutting his way to a well-made 58 before Foulkes delivered the ball of the match. A scrambled-seam delivery held its line, beat Brook’s outside edge and clipped the top of off stump. Once Brook departed, the lower order offered little resistance. Archer (15) gloved a spitting delivery from Smith to first slip, Atkinson (23) edged O’Rourke behind, and Foulkes wrapped up the innings by having Tongue caught at short square leg for 2. England were bowled out for 354, conceding a first-innings deficit of 84.
Archer Strikes Back, Then Ravindra Takes Charge
Archer was hostile from the first ball of New Zealand’s second innings. He had Latham (4) trapped lbw with an angled delivery that jagged back, then struck Conway on the helmet with a vicious bouncer before finding his edge in the same over. At 12/2, England sensed an opening. Atkinson added Nicholls (16) to make it 51/3, and the series decider looked wide open.
Ravindra and Mitchell then produced exactly the partnership New Zealand needed. Ravindra played with controlled aggression, punishing loose deliveries from Tongue and driving handsomely through the covers, reaching his fifty off 79 balls. Mitchell survived some awkward moments against Bashir, who found sharp turn, but ground his way to 26 not out. Their unbroken 69-run stand shifted the momentum firmly back to New Zealand heading into Day 4.

What Day 4 Holds
New Zealand resume at 120/3 with a lead of 204 and the well-set pair of Ravindra and Mitchell at the crease. With the pitch showing uneven bounce, as Archer and several NZ seamers exploited throughout the day, the surface is becoming increasingly difficult to bat on. England need early wickets to keep the target under 300, but with Ravindra looking composed and the likes of Tom Blundell and Mitchell Santner still to come, New Zealand are in a strong position to bat the hosts out of the match and clinch the series 2-1.
